2008-06-11 - Press conference at the Bulgarian Embassy in Rome

On July 10, 2008 the Bulgarian Embassy in Italy held a press conference dedicated to the First European Festival of Ancient Rome in Svishtov (27-29 June, 2008) with the headline "After 2,000 years the First Italian Legion is going back to its headquarters in Novae - Bulgaria." In his welcoming speech Ambassador Atanas Mladenov pointed out the significance of the upcoming event as an interesting opportunity for cultural and historic cooperation between Bulgaria and Italy, as well as a reason for direct contact and information with the rich archaeological heritage in Bulgaria. He also indicated the importance and contribution of Bulgaria as cradle to ancient civilizations to the European cultural dialogue - a topic of certain significance especially in 2008, which is proclaimed a year of multicultural dialogue. Andrea Cologni, part of the cultural organization "Legio I Italica", a member of the European consortium for historic reconstructions, presented the project that would expect a 3-day restoration of Roman Empire's life and ancient rituals by representatives from 15 states. Mr. Cologni explained that First Italian Legion had been formed by Emperor Nero in 67 A.D. and the lands around Svishtov had been its center for 300 years. An exclusive presentation of a wine made especially for the festival from vineyards around Svishtov caused great excitement since it had been made following the 2,000-year-old technology of Ancient Romans.

At the press conference were journalists from Italian media, among them the biggest Italian news agency ANSA, the national TV RAI, printed and electronic media, historians, archaeologists, representatives of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, entrepreneurs and tourist agencies. The interest about the event was great and many questions were asked.
